If we are not careful, we can approach the scripture at times with a bit of arrogance. Especially comparing ourselves to others. Can you call your own heart what it is? Or you to busy calling others out?
Self-righteousness at the core is conjuring up good about ourselves when the Bible tells us there isn’t anything good that comes from our heart. (Re-read Romans 7).
So why do we spend so much time producing a perfect image, when we are so far from it?
It’s impossible to do anything eternally good unless our heart is right. Jesus exposes our hearts, even though we go to great lengths to cover it up or make it look better than it is.
The Christian life begins with this: Obedience to what He calls us to do. Not hearers only but doers. Humility is essential. (He resists the proud). Why do you call me Lord, Lord and do not do what I say? Doing what he says starts with a realistic view of where you are.
Self righteousness is the enemy of the gospel.
